A Brief Overview
Located in the town of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at PSMC provides the highest quality rural cancer treatment through expertise, support, and compassion for patients and their family members.
Oncology is the study of malignant blood disorders. Almost everyone has had a friend or family member whose life has been touched by cancer. As unique as each cancer is, so is the burden the diagnosis carries with it. With a lack of access to quality cancer care there is a greater burden placed on those that choose to live in rural areas.
Understanding this, PSMC delivers high-quality cancer care with individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient. Our care team takes the time to understand each unique diagnosis and each individual’s needs. We work together to develop an integrated cancer treatment plan specific to each patient. There is not a single way to beat cancer, there are many, and we will asses all options available to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.
THE PSMC CARE TEAM IS COMPOSED OF:
A medical oncologist and medical director of The Center with extensive experience in managing treatment for cancer patients.
A pharmacist and administrative director of The Center with experience and knowledge about chemotherapy drugs and medications to treat patients.
An advanced practice nurse with broad experience in administering care and chemotherapy for cancer patients.
An oncology nurse navigator with experience and a passion for assisting patients and families with coordination of care and education related to treatments.
An infusion nurse experienced in administering infusion and chemotherapy medications.

Chemotherapy is a method of fighting cancer and utilizes either standalone drugs or a combination of drugs to treat the disease. It can be used to: reduce the size of tumors before surgery or radiation therapy, remove cancer cells post-surgery, control the growth of cancer cells, and even eliminate cancer cells. Through advances in medicine and clinical trials, chemotherapy provides oncologists with a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer. There is a wide variety of new medications that minimize the side effects from chemotherapy.
A medical oncologist can prescribe chemotherapy. The educational background for this specialty includes a degree from medical school, internal medicine residency training, plus additional oncology specific fellowship training.
In addition to chemotherapy and other medical treatments, the PSMC care team believes strongly in the effectiveness of emotional support. We offer a variety of resources and support services to help our patients and their families.
Detection of cancer cells is the first step in the fight against cancer. We use diagnostic imaging to help determine how advanced the cancer is.
Diagnostic imaging at PSMC offers medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment through many modalities including:
- CT Imaging
- Bone Density Imaging
State of the Art Care Software
High quality cancer care is enhanced with our state of the art software that networks clinical decisions and pathways with over 1,000 oncologists across the nation. The collaboration allows rural cancer centers to make decisions based off clinical trials and advanced sciences and research.
Pharmacists at PSMC
PSMC’s certified pharmacists have experience with chemotherapy drugs and medications used to treat cancer. They can also provide medications to counter side effects of certain treatments. An in-house pharmacist is a significant benefit to patients, which is often missing in other cancer programs; PSMC’s pharmacists are available to support both the oncology care team and the patients.
Support services are those that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers and blood disorders. Support services can help address issues that may occur during treatment.
Our care team believes strongly in the benefits from all types of support during a patient’s journey with cancer.
